General Studies Major
What does a general studies major do?
A general studies major receives a broad education, generally covering liberal arts, physical and social sciences, and humanities. Although you can obtain a program in general studies, many college students begin a general studies major so that they can take classes in various subjects and figure out what disciplines they like best. It is commonplace for freshman and sophomores to use a general studies major as a placeholder until they are ready to declare a college major.
Some universities allow general studies majors to participate in creating their own curriculum, while others require general studies majors to follow specific coursework.
How much does a general studies program cost?
School costs vary widely, depending on the type of school you choose and what type of program you are pursing. You can find average school costs for public general studies colleges and private general studies colleges in our compare colleges section.
How do I pay for a general studies program?
Whether you are paying for an undergraduate or graduate general studies program, it’s important that you complete the FAFSA and review your financial aid options. You should start by trying to obtain college scholarships and college grants (free money) to pay for your general studies program. Then use federal student loans, such as the Federal Stafford Loan. If free money and federal loans are not enough to pay for your general studies program, you can begin to
research private student loans to cover the remainder of your school costs.
